Diabetic retinopathy poses a serious threat to vision. DR is a highly specific vascular complication of type 2 diabetes. The prevalence of retinopathy is strongly related to the duration of diabetes. After 20 years of diabetes, above 60% of patients with type 2 diabetes have some degree of retinopathy. Patients with DR are 25 times more likely to become blind than non-diabetics.
To find out the probability of developing DR up to a given period of time of an individual.
Sampling Design simple random sampling. Sample Size: n = 30 Participant: diabetic patients with DR. Study Area: Aravind Eye Hospital, Puducherry (UT). Study Variables: Hypertension, Family history of DR, Neurological problem and duration of DR. Study Tool: using pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire. Software Used: Data were entered in Microsoft Excel 2007 and analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 version software.
Out of 30 patients, 20 (66.67%) were male and 9 (33.33%) were female. Mean age of the patients was 54.60 ± 7.86 years (range: 37 – 70 years). Mean duration of DR was 8.52 ± 3.87 years (range: 6 – 20 years). A patient with the covariate combination of (1,1,1) with 18 years of diabetic compliance, he was the probability of having retinopathy is 0.90 and for covariate (0,0,0) the probability is 0.67.
It could be seen that the probability of having retinopathy is high for the persons with the covariate combination (1,1,1). As the number of years under diabetes increases the probability of incidence of retinopathy also increases. The probability of having retinopathy is the smallest, for the covariate combination (0,0,0). So, early detection of DR is engaging attention in India.
