Abstract

When people sell their services and spend their working lives on the premises of purchaser of those services, a varying amount of dissatisfaction, discontent and industrial unrest are likely to occur. Employees are especially interested in higher wages, healthy working conditions, opportunity to advance, satisfying work, some voice in industrial affairs (trade union) and protection against loss of wages, over work and arbitrary treatment. But when such things are deprived of to them because employers cut down their expenditure on labour to increase their profits, employees are forced to exert their rights and stop working to make the employers understand their grievances and redress them. The same situation being prevailed in the BSNL where the employee strength of nearly 3, 57,000 are on roll and the measures of government in controlling personnel's were failed. The competitors of BSNL ie; all private telecoms have built competitive strategy against BSNL, one of the largest and leading public sector units in India. BSNL being the 7th World largest Telecommunication's has affected with strikes since 2002. The causes includes not only with Economic factors but also Social, Political and Personal factors too. The sound union system present in the BSNL strengthens the workers to call for strike and has disturbed industrial peace in the sector. The causes led to this unrest and its effects are discussed in this case study.
