Library and information professionals @ global information environment: the challenge ahead for developing countries

The evolving information and knowledge-based economy, with an increasing emphasis on the important role of information and knowledge, has had an impact on every form of organization and every form of business in some way or another. Information professionals and librarians have been coping well and addressing the many challenges brought about by the electronic global information environment. The direct consequence of globalization and the information age in which the global community finds itself is the need for conscious re-examination and redirection of library services in order to serve the global community. Libraries of developing countries, like their counterparts elsewhere, are faced with challenges of globalization. This paper addresses number of key challenges facing by information professionals/librarians in providing people with the right information in the context of the global village and what steps to be taken to overcome these barriers/challenges in global information environment. To investigate contemporary issues in global information environment, explore the role of information professionals in adapting to the current information environment, and suggest possible solutions and recommendations.
