To be effective in any job people need to possess a specific skill-set or competencies and also the ability to put these competencies into practice. A competency is an interrelated set of skills, behaviours, attitudes and knowledge needed by an individual to be effective in most professional and managerial positions. Competency Mapping is about identifying preferred behaviours and personal skills, which distinguish excellent and outstanding performance from the average.Competency-based HR is considered the best HR. The competency framework serves as the bedrock for all HR applications.Designing and developing competency frameworks is a complex task and must be accomplished in a series of steps.Competency-based HR management focuses first on the person and then on his or her outputs or results. With all aspects of HR integrated through competencies, rather than through jobs and work activities, the organization has a competency-based HR system.Competency Mapping facilitates and enables an enhancement of the Competence Quotient of employees i.e. the degree to which an employee is effective and efficient. The managerial implication of this article is that the presence of the right combination of competencies in an individual is imperative for attaining a high Competence Quotient in work performance.
