Abstract

The principle of respect for differences and acceptance of disability as part of human diversity and humanity is important as disability is a universal feature of the human condition. Also, differences in children such as age, gender, ethnicity, language, HIV should be acknowledged and respected. RTE mandates free and compulsory education to all children from 6–14 years of age. The key objective of RTE-SSA is Universalization of Elementary Education (UEE). This goal of UEE, has further been facilitated by the constitutional (86th Amendment) Act, making free and compulsory Elementary Education a Fundamental Right, for all children in the age group of 6–14 years. This amendment has given a new thrust to the Inclusive Education, as without inclusion of CWSN (Children with Special Needs) the objective of UEE and hence RTE-2009 cannot be achieved. The major thrust of RTE-SSA is on inclusion or mainstreaming CWSN into the fabric of formal elementary schooling (zero rejection policy). But in reality RTE act have not much for children with special needs. In this paper an attempt have been made to through some light on present status of inclusive education and RTE act.
