The prevalence of anemia in India among women is 56% which is a major public health concern.
To study the determinants of anemia in females of the age group of 11–49 years in a rural area of Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu.
A community based age (±5 years) matched case control study was done in the rural area of Chunampet, Cheyyur taluk of Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu.
Females in the age group of 11–49.
April 2013 to June 2013.
Females in the age group of 11–49 with blood hemoglobin less than 11g/dl.
Females in the age group of 11–49 with blood hemoglobin 11 or more than 11g/dl.
Women in age group 11–49 years who attained menarche and those willing to participate in study.
Not willing to participate in the study.
160 cases and 160 controls were interviewed.
Cases and controls were selected by house to house survey based on Hb value.
All study subjects were interviewed after getting informed consent.
Data was analyzed using statistical software SPSS version 16, Chi square test was applied for significance.
Lower socio economic status (OR=1.9, 95%CI= 0.5–6.2), open air defecation (OR=3.1, 95%CI=1.8–5.4), not using slippers (OR=1.7, 95% CI=1.01–2.9) and passage of clots (OR=3.7, 95% CI=1.2–11.6) were found to be significantly associated with anemia.
