Radio is one of the dominant mass medium in the India. It enjoys the highest reach as compared to Television and newspaper in country. Due to these advantages radio has proven itself instrumental in development, particularly with the rise of private channels. It has facilitated a far more participatory and horizontal type of communication than it was possible before. Radio has also established itself as most inexpensive and strongest medium in filling the communication gap between the people and the Government. This paper will focus on the contribution of radio in society and economy of India. Simultaneously it will also talk about the current problems and future avenues of the industry.
