Abstract

The paper begins by providing some statistics on the absolute size and growth of private schools in india, suggesting how important the private sector is in imparting education. It also summarizes empirical evidence on how private schools compare with public schools in terms of quality (measured by student attainment) and unit cost. In section 3, i have made an attempt to explain better outcomes in private schools and have developed a formal model. The paper concludes by providing some policy implications.
