Abstract

This study is about gender and entrepreneurship performance differences. Empirical studies made in different countries confirm significant differences in female and male entrepreneurship performances. Such gender differences are significantly and systematically observed, and they vary across different countries. The issue of female and male entrepreneurship has received growing attention among policy makers in Ethiopia. The objective of this study is to investigate the gender and entrepreneurship performance differences in Ethiopia. That is to identify and to test whether there is statistically significance difference between gender and entrepreneurship performances. Descriptive and inferential types of statistics were used. Questionnaires were used to collect data from randomly selected male and female entrepreneurs. Systematic sampling type of probability sampling was used to select samples from population. Tables, chart, graph, means, standard deviation and standard error of the mean are used to analyze the data. Independent Samples t Test was used to compares the performance means of two independent groups in order to determine whether there is statistical evidence that the associated population means are significantly different.

The performance means of the male entrepreneur respondents is 3.6 and the standard deviation is.788 while the performance means of female entrepreneur respondent is 3.5 and the standard deviation is.714. The performance means of the male respondents’ sample mean is.052 standard deviations close to the male population performance means but the performance means of the female respondents sample means is.055 standard deviation close to female population performance means. The t-value at 377 degree of freedom is 1.278 or t (377) = 1.278. The p-value is.202. Since the p-value is greater than the significance level (.202 is greater than.05), then the statistic is not significant (meaning researcher is 95% confident that the difference between the performance means of the two groups is due to chance or due to sampling error). The results of the study, therefore, show that there are no statistically significant performance differences between male and female entrepreneurs in Ethiopia.
