Abstract

This case is about Jivi Pharmaceuticals (Pvt.) Ltd. and the Performance Appraisals related conflicts and issues facing it. Jivi Pharmaceuticals was established in 1976 in Europe. The protagonist in the case is a young executive Ms. Lekha Chaturvedi who was very unhappy because of her performance appraisal. She felt that she deserved much more than what she was getting in terms of the Compensation and Benefits. The author of the case has conducted semi structured and unstructured interviews with the key stakeholders of the firm to understand the theme from their perspective. The author has also used the participant and disguised observation technique to gauge the intensity of the matter before deciding to write a case on this issue. The key finding is that the fitting all the employees on the Normal Distribution Curve popularly known as the Bell Curve was certainly creating some barriers to effective appraisals. The case ends on the business decision dilemma as to what all could be the possible reasons for the dissatisfaction among employees on the Performance Appraisal front and what could be the solutions to the problem.
