The purpose of this study was to analyze critical success factors which facilitated a successful transformation of Singapore from third world to first world country within a single generation (1965–2000) and hence forth suggesting how the success factors can be replicated in developing countries, Tanzania being a case study. Those key successful factors include visionary and transformation leadership, economic policies on attracting direct foreign investment and human development strategy characterized with integrity, hard working and sound values.
The study employed qualitative method with descriptive research design to describe the experience of one country in terms of development which can be learned by other developing countries. The study has used secondary data, literatures (such as online journals, books and reports), and photographs to describe different trends of Singapore in its stages of development. The study concluded that poor countries are poor not because they are lacking natural resources or they are located in a bad geographical position, but they are poor because of bad leadership which is lacking proper vision and policies reflected in the economic development of their countries and in the lives of the people they are leading. The study recommended that, Tanzania needs visionary and transformational leaders who can develop good economic policies, have integrity and values, who can transform the country and the lives of Tanzanians because where there is no visionary and transformational leadership, countries cannot develop.
