The financial crisis of 2008 has thrown up new challenges for the financial institutions, more so for the banks in terms of performance efficiency. This paper evaluates performance of select commercial banks from public and private sector in India. Selection of the banks is based on their Market capitalisation. The Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) have been identified based on the Capital adequacy, Operational efficiency, and Liquidity and Profitability perspectives. The analysis is based on the secondary data available from annual reports, RBI and government reports and other web resources. The select banks have been evaluated and ranked on basis of the identified key performance indicators. An attempt has been made to understand the reasons for the above-mentioned performance. Opportunities and probable options for improving the KPI's are also looked at.
