With the growth of transport facilities villages cease to be isolated, commercial farming, substitute subsistence farming, perishable goods industries like fishing, poultry farming, daring and horticulture develop and social and cultural standings go up.
It is found that material costs constitute 20 to 22% of the total cost of construction of one Km. of road. Wages constitute nearly 60% of the total cost of construction of one Km. of road. For earth work and black topping the ratio between skilled and unskilled workers varies between 1: 109 to 1: 117 and 1: 21 to 1: 12 respectively. The total wages received by skilled and unskilled labours is about 1: 36 to 1: 39 for earth work, 1: 7 for black topping and 1: 4 for cross drainage works.
Road and road transport created 10400 jobs. The same investment could generate less jobs in other sector. The work of construction of black topped village road create 12, 137 man days employment in a year in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
The existence of transport problems depend on the transport facilities available in the villages. Economic development of rural area of region point to the fact that if proper transport services and approachable roads develop in a particular area, the economic development of that area can be develop tremendously.
