Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy. Majority of farming communities earn their livelihood from agriculture and allied activities. In independent India, major breakthrough took place in 1969 after nationalization of commercial banks to make the benefits of institutional finance to reach a wider range of economic activities. The rural credit system in India has been instrumental in enhancing production and stimulating investment in agriculture. The rural credit system has to play an important role in this transformation phase and has to face the challenges of supporting the credit requirement of higher order and diverse type for both production and investment purpose. KCCscheme was introduced in August 1998. Today KCC has emerged as an innovative credit delivery mechanism to meet the production credit requirements of the farmers.. The implementing banks have the discretion to adopt the scheme to suit institution/location specific requirements. The State governments have been advised to launch an intensive branch/village level campaign to provide KCC to all the eligible and willing farmers in a time bound manner. The present study was undertaken with specific objectives to evaluate the performance of Kisan credit Card scheme in Karnataka and to assess the relationship of KCCs and Agriculture development in Karnataka state. The study used secondary data on kisan credit card issued and amount sanctioned which was collected from NABARD. The study examined that progress and performance of KCCs in Karnataka.
