Abstract

In some parts of India three out of four households include a migrant. Though migrants constitute about 30 percent of the total population of the country, migration has not been studied extensively in India. Migration is the result of numerous factors; many migrate in search of greater opportunities-to earn a better living, to live in a more agreeable environment and the list goes on, in this respect studying migration becomes more relevant. The present study of migration in Karnataka is important to measure the transitory phases of development and their relation with the population move. This paper analyses the rate of migration, economic and educational background of migrants, and duration of migration, internal migration, short-duration migration and reasons for migration with special reference to Karnataka state of India during 2007–08.
