Abstract

The study was aimed to review the socio-economic status of tribe communities of the Chamarajanagara district of the Karnataka state. Two taluks of the Chamarajanagara district were selected for the study based on their highly Schedule tribe populous status; Yalandur and Hanuru. Primary survey of 140 households was carried out and the various socio-economic status assessed were; caste, income, educational level, occupational structure, size of landholding, types of crop cultivation. The study revealed that there are two different scheduled tribes (JenuKuruba and Soliga) residing in the selected study area. The present study has used both primary and secondary sources of data. The secondary source of data has been collected from several Reports and documents of the Karnataka state. The literature has also been gathered from published articles, books and Govt reports. In the study area, the higher percentage of respondents reported that the main cause of backwardness and poverty, as well as lack of education, lack of awareness among govt facilities(Programmes), culture constraints, Patriarchal system such as the low status of tribal communities(Jenukuruba and Soliga).
