Seasonal migration is widely undertaken by socially deprived groups such as the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, who are asset-poor and face resource and livelihood deficits. At the same time the agricultural labourers, marginal and small farmers from backward regions are also compelled to migrate. Socio economic, geographical and political factors kept Marathwada downturn in the state. The region is known for its drought, falling as it does in the rain-shadow area of Maharashtra. The research study is concerned with temporary and seasonal migration for employment from backward area of Marathwada region to western region of Maharashtra state by such agricultural labourers, marginal and small farmers. This research paper examines the nature and characteristics of agricultural labourers, marginal and small farmers who are seasonal migrants. Significant factors that compels for migration are ‘Less land to earn sufficiently’, ‘Automation of work’, ‘Dowry and other expenses in daughters marriage’, and ‘Lack of Irrigation facility’. To overcome this social hitch, It is necessary to focus sustainable agriculture strategy, financial assistance and genuine execution of irrigation projects in Marathwada. The state governments should initiate high-tech agricultural ventures in the rural areas on the line of Netherland. Central government should strengthen the rural infrastructure and boost MSMEs in the rural and backward part of the India
