Abstract

Women are the backbone of our society. Women always play an effective role in a household as well as economy of our country. But till today women are lagging behind the men. The Government of our country has been initiating several programmes for the socio-economic development of women since independence. In this context Self Help Group (SHG) has become a successful strategy for the empowerment of women in India since 1980. This study focuses on, review of various literatures pertaining to women empowerment and find out the research issues. The study also examines various socio-economic and institutional problems relating to women empowerment of different SHGs and SHG members. This study is confined with the Lakhimpur district of Assam. Data collected from different SHGs and SHG members of selected development blocks of Lakhimpur district of Assam under progressive sample method. The study confined with the 200 respondents (SHG members) as sample. The study found various problems of women empowerment through SHG and also suggested to overcome the problems.
