Potentialities of tourism in north east region: An evaluation

Abstract

North eastern part of India comprising of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura possess great physical and human diversities to project it as one of the potential areas of the country in respect of tourism promotion. NE India is well blessed by nature and it is also treasure house of various economic resources. Tourism has greatest potential for generating income and employment opportunities in North-East Indian States because NE is not only characterized by the blendg of flora and fauna, it is exceptionally rich in bio-diversity. Moreover wildlife sanctuaries, tea tourism and golf tourism can attract tourists from all over the world. Despite of having tremendous tourism potential, the tourism industry in the area is still miles to go to exploit proper tourism potentialities. The NE India is plagued by multiple problems including insurgency, poverty, lack of infrastructure and communication bottlenecks which have rendered it poorer and isolated the region from the rest of the country. Development of tourism industry through proper campaigning of region‟s wide varieties of physical and cultural products can bring dramatic change to the present socio-economic situation of the region. Considering the significance of tourism sector as a catalyst for regional development, an attempt has been made in this article to identify and showcase the tourism ventures in potential areas of north eastern states. The paper also evaluates the development of tourism industry and highlights the major constraints coming in way of its development. Also, some measures are suggested in order to improve the present scenario of tourism.
