Attitude towards corneal donation on family of potential donors

The purpose of this exploratory research is to understand better the key drivers of commitment to corneal donation in Kerala, as viewed by potential donor families. Through this study, the policymakers, as well as local Eye Banks, can make an effort to improve its current awareness programs through better targeting and messaging. Although many researchers have studied public attitudes towards eye donation, no study has examined behavioural drives at the time of donation. For collecting the data, the semi-structured interview method was used when the death cases brought from HCRP Centre were screened with potential donors by the counsellor. The next kin of potential donor were approached and counselled in a systematic manner, utilized a standard semi-structured interview pattern to elicit information from them. Responses were noticed in a predesigned Performa. The religion, level of literacy, socioeconomic status, relationship with deceased, prior knowledge of eye donation, willingness, reasons for donating as well as refusing, etc. were recorded. The sample size was 60.
