A study of the relationship between personality and depression

The present study investigates the relationship between personality traits and depression. 300 students (150 males, 150 females) of various colleges in Aizawl participated in the study. Significant gender differences was found in neuroticism (p<.01, t = - 4.61) and depression (p<.01, t = -3.36); with female college students having higher levels of depression and neuroticism than male college students. Findings also revealed significant negative correlation (r = - 0.147, p< 0.05) between extraversion and depression and significant positive correlation (r = 0.341, p<0.01) between neuroticism and depression. Further analysis found neuroticism and extraversion to significantly predict depression.
