The success of any service based organization largely depends on the Employee performance and commitment Service organizations have no other choices but to provide excellent service as demanded by the customers or they have to face the risk of losing them to their competitors. The study is aimed at finding out whether the HR practices like performance appraisal, training and career development in the private sector banks are positively related to organizational commitment of employees which in turn will enable them to become responsible organisational citizens. It is also attempted to find out whether perceived organizational support would serve as a mediator in the relationship between HRM practices and commitment. The statistical results on data gathered from a sample of 214 employees in the private banks demonstrated that career development and performance appraisal have direct, positive and significant relationships with organizational commitment. In addition, perceived organizational support was found to partially mediate the relationships between two of the three HRM practices (career development and performance appraisal) and commitment.
