Gender discrimination among the girl children in Puducherry: A marine fishing community study

Abstract

This study focused on “Gender Discrimination among the Girl Children in Puducherry”. Women face discrimination right from the childhood. Many developing countries including India have displayed gender discrimination in education, employment and health etc. There are vast differences in education level of two sexes. In the community most of (86%) the girl children are studying government school, in case of their brothers (76%) are studying in private schools. Commonly (40%) of the girl children had face harassment (such as beating and scolding); girl children (84%) in general are given lesser food both in quality and quantity and therefore are [undernourished] compared to boy children, also she is expected to help at home, either in household work like washing, cooking or help in taking care of her younger siblings. Education is the tool that can help break the pattern of gender discrimination and bring lasting change for women. The purposive sampling method was used for this study.
