Good writing skills in graduate students: The need of the hour

Though language is a tool for communication, it becomes powerful when it is used effectively. Mere completion of the prescribed text-books in schools and colleges does not bring about the desired output. The main task of the language teachers is to develop the communication skills of learners through essential and challenging approaches. Of the four language learning skills, writing is considered the most complex. Despite the fact that knowledge of students in languages and other subjects is tested mainly through writing, their writing skill is not up to the mark. Beginning with an introduction to teaching writing, the paper analyzes the primary reasons for the lack of writing skills of students even at higher levels, and suggests some remedial measures for developing the writing skill. It also highlights the benefits that would accrue from developing good writing skills and the difference it can make in one's career.
