The present paper focuses on the present status of Indian power sector and analyses various problems confronting by it. It uses extensively the secondary data for effective analysis and interpretation. The power sector is the most important constituent of infrastructure. The performance of the power sector directly impacts the overall economy of the country. Its failure, especially in major areas such as power, reduces productivity and radically affects the quality of life. There is every reason to believe that in the developing countries today investments in infrastructure have been improper despite high costs, and therefore have not been rendering the services effectively. The infrastructure has become supremely important for a nation's economic development, as it provides the basic structural foundation for it. And it is far more so in the case of developing countries of the world as their economic development, which had been neglected for long, for various reasons, depends very much upon their raising an effective and efficient infrastructure which can respond to demand and provide the required services promptly and efficiently. But no improvement in this sector as desired for various reasons. This paper analyses based on the facts and offered appropriate suggestions for toning up its performance further.
