Abstract

The study aims to test hypotheses that people living in the ‘Disturbed Area--more dangerous situations’ would have higher death anxiety than that of those inhabiting in the ‘Non-Disturbed Area--less dangerous situations’, and that women and younger persons would have higher death anxiety than men and older persons respectively. A total of 194 participants with age range 45–96 years (mean=72.45 years) completed the Death Anxiety Scale (Upinder Dhar et al., 1998), standardized in the Indian context, consisting of 10 items. t-test results revealed that persons residing in the more dangerous situations had higher death anxiety than that of those living in less dangerous situations. Women as compared with men and younger persons as compared with older persons tended to be more death anxious. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future research were also discussed.
