The objective of the study was to shed light for East African countries and other developing countries the benefits to participate in the Clean Development Mechanism for sustainable development and provide empirical evidence of the potential of benefits of the CDM projects viable development and investments. The study offered as well a strategy for developing capacity within the East African region and, how the region CDM market can be made more attractive through reducing project risks.
The study employed descriptive research design whereby it focused on describing how the Annex 1 countries produce the large amount of greenhouse gases which to large extent affects the developing countries which unfortunately are not responsible for its production. The data for the study obtained primarily from literature survey and other related documents on climate change and sustainable development.
The study has shared light that the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has been proposed as a means of reducing the costs of abating greenhouse gasses, and for assisting developing countries. Its implementation is of particular interest to the East African countries and other developing countries in general because it allows the transfer of resources and technologies for the reduction of the country's greenhouse gas emissions.
