Abstract

In this study, we show that using control charting techniques to monitor students’ grades in a statistics course has advantages to both students and instructors. Students gain an understanding of some basic concepts taught in the course by using a statistical tool to monitor their grades. In addition, students write a plan of action for improvement if there is statistical evidence of a decline in their grades. The instructor can introduce various types of variation in a data set and has a chance to introduce control charts used in industry that are usually not addressed in an elementary statistics course.
