The effects of Interclan conflict on development among the Kuria community of Kuria east district in Kenya

The Inter clan clashes in Kuria East District were sparked off by Interclan rivalries of cattle rustling and the creation of the new district and its headquarters. This study sought to find out the effect of the conflict on development with a bias to Kuria East District. Relevant literature was collected from respondents who included area leaders, administrators’ chiefs and Assistant Chiefs, and interviews of members of the public through public barazas as well as personal experience of the author in the course of duty as a district officer in the area. Other sources of data were individuals, faith based organization and NGOs. Focused individual and a group discussion in barazas (meetings within communities) were also used to gather key information regarding the conflict.

Other secondary sources were used particularly on information concerning the history of the District, its socio, economic, geographic and political activities that inform the current conflict. The study found out that the conflict had negative consequences on development in the district, however, necessary measures have been undertaken by the government, NGO's CBO's and faith based organization in order to avert the recurrence of the conflict. This study recommends that necessary measures be taken in order to uplift the livelihoods of the people in the area, they include improved education, abandoning retrogressive cultures and improvement of the existing infrastructure to improve economic activities and offer alternative livelihoods to the people.
