Man is a social being and the social security, which earlier was called Economic security, is of prime importance for his survival and holistic well being. The Authors herewith trace the historical evolution of the Theories, principles and legal framework of the concept of social security. From the vedic period, to the great Indian rulers like Kautilya and Ashoka, to the British Colonisation, and post colonisation independent India. The different Indian legislations guaranteeing social security and benefits, the Constitutional rights and remedies are addressed. The International scenario has also been fathomed including the different countries and their set up for social security. Also the article correlates the resolutions of the ILO and its approach to the social security.
