This study was conducted to assess HIV/AIDS and sexual risk factor practices among sex workers in Batangas City. Descriptive design was utilized to describe the profile of the respondents, the level of awareness and their sexual practices. A purposive sample of 100 sexual workers was surveyed. The researchers utilized the instrument of Dr. Ernesto R. Gregorio, Jr., et Al from University of the Philippines, Manila. Eta square was utilized to determine the relationship of the respondents profile and sexual practices.
Results of the study showed that majority of the respondents belonged to 15–25 years old, who identified themselves as homosexuals, and almost all of the respondents are Roman Catholic. They are not well educated since majority of them are high school graduate and in the service work with a monthly income of P6, 000. The respondents were aware that the use of condom prevents the transmission of STD. They are knowledgeable that HIV/AIDS can be acquired through sexual intercourse. However, respondents do not have adequate knowledge on the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
Sexual practices of the respondents are manifestations of their level of understanding about the transmission of HIV/AIDS at greater risk for developing HIV/AIDS. There is a relationship between the respondents profile and level of awareness. The level of awareness on mode of transmission of HIV/AIDS depends largely on educational attainment. The sexual act is predominantly dependent on their monthly income. They tend to do such sexual practices due to financial needs. Proposed Community Extension Program that will increase the level of awareness on HIV should be utilized.
