This paper seeks to understand temporal changes taking place in Indian cities during the era of economic reforms. The urbanization is rapidly growing due to population increase and migration of the people from rural to urban areas. During this period, there was an increase in the absolute number of urban poor. Number of cities increased, arranging infrastructural facilities have become challenge slum dwellers in cities looking for improve their standard of living. Housing and increasing cost of living is a major threat to the urban poor. In view of this paper attempts to discuss major issues related to urbanization and the Indian experience in this regard.
