Perspectives on second language teaching

The present students at the tertiary level need a learning environment in which they seek more involvement. The challenge for the English language teacher is to create such a situation and enhance the morale of the students. ESL/EFL teacher certainly needs to augment the motivational levels of the students and provide a platform for better learning. The present paper explores the various teaching methods followed by the faculty at VIT University and includes the findings of a questionnaire on English language teaching at the tertiary level in VIT University. The findings reveal that majority of the teachers prefer communicative language teaching method. They also have a preference for group work for it enhances the motivational levels of the students. Group work also affects the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills of both the engineering and non-engineering students. These activities perpetually enhance their motivational levels to perform better along with their peers. Apart from helping the students improve all the four skills, the ESL/EFL teacher is challenged to integrate internet resources to make the course relevant for the techno savvy generation.
