Abstract

Emotions are an extremely important part of our lives, and they profoundly affect our actions, even though we're not always aware of them. Skillful understanding and balancing of emotions is called Emotion Regulation. Emotion regulation skills develop over the course of infancy and childhood and continue to mature during adolescence. These skills are critical to mental health, academic achievement, and good social relationships. Poor emotion regulation skill (called emotional dysregulation) is viewed as a core feature of emotional problems and maladjustment. The present study examines the relation between emotional regulation and mental health of youth. Sample comprises 121 college students between the age range 18–20 yrs and their emotion regulation and mental health status are assessed using DERS scale and MH Scale. The obtained data are analysed using Pearson Correlation and ANOVA. Result revealed that Mental Health status and Emotional Dysregulation are negatively correlated with each other. The findings also suggest that there is significant difference between high, moderate and low DERS groups on mental Health. Thus the present study focuses on the idea that Emotion Dysregulation reduces mental Health and has implication for planning emotion regulation intervention strategies.
