Control and raising constructions in Manipuri can be made by the use of the ba particle. I propose that the bə particle projects a Modal Phrase with futurity and potentiality features. Infinitival clauses in Control and Raising constructions are distinguished by the selectional properties of the main verb as well as their interpretive properties. I suggest that in Manipuri, main verbs in Control constructions take MoodP complements. Since -bə particle is a defective mood, it is not a complementizer. CP can be reduced in the structure owing to the economy principle not to let the argument undergo improper movement. On the other hand, main verbs in Raising constructions also take the same MoodP complements as the default option for reasons of economy principle such as Greed.
