Trend analysis of labour productivity performance of Indian coal industry

In this paper, the trend analysis of labour productivity performance of Indian coal industry is done. 55% of energy need of India is catered by coal sector. India is the third largest hard coal producing country in the world still India doesn't meet their needs, which force India to import coal from other countries. In this developing India, the gap between demand and supply is widening. So, coal production needs speedup. Productivity indicator of coal mines is output per man shift (OMS), which show the labour productivity. In this paper, labour productivity of past 20 years is calculated and analyzed to find out its growth trend. After 1993 amendment Coal Mines Act 1973 private companies also came into the coal mining activity. In this paper, a comparison among the various governmental and private coal mining entities is also done.
