‘Educate a woman and you educate a Society’. These words stated by the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhiji is always resounded when discussion about ‘Women Empowerment’, ‘Women Education’ and ‘Significance of Women in Society’ is mentioned. Nevertheless, our Policy makers are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring free education for women. The latest in such scheme is the provision of free education to the ‘single girl child’ from the school level upto the post graduation and research level as well. However, are the various schemes for women development (education/entrepreneurship) and the various programmes being organised by several NGO's in addition to those being organised by the Central and respective State Governments that we hear on the radio, watch on television or read in the newspapers, actually touching the beneficiaries. Do they (the government/NGO's) really analyze and investigate the effectiveness of the various schemes and plans and the level of its implementation?
This article is the result of an empirical study on residents (women) of one of the backward areas (slum) in the city of Mysore namely Ghousia Nagar. The study has been focused basically on women's education and has tried to elicit the opinion of women in this area on the need for higher education and provision of education for the girl child in their respective families. The study is an outcome of the UGC funded Minor project on Knowledge Management Practices in Institutions of Higher education, a study of select Institution in Mysore City.
