A study on social sustainability of wind power

This paper attempts to study the social sustainability of wind power projects. The sustainability is the core principle of livelihood security and well-being. The Indian and world reserves of fossil fuels are fast depleting. The future generation is left with no option other than going in for renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, nuclear and small hydro. Amongst these, wind power installation is the latest mantra in global Endeavour to improve the power generation scenario. This paper identifies the social sustainability of the wind power in terms of employment opportunities, revenue to land owners, tax payment to rural communities, local development and financial spin-off for the communities. This study is based only on secondary data. The findings of the study maypave way to explore further research in measuring the social viability of the wind power.
