Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the growth pattern of commercial banks in Ethiopia from the period 2001 to 2013. The data is secondary in nature and collected from the annual reports of eight commercial banks, National Bank of Ethiopia over a period of thirteen years and purposive sampling technique was used to select the sampled commercial banks. Bank branches, employees, capital, assets, EPS, deposit and loan and advances are used as parameters to assess the growth pattern of commercial banks. Trend analysis, coefficient of determination, Coefficient of Variation, Compound Annual Growth Rate and F-test were employed to analyse the data. The result revealed that recently all banks have shown a promising growth in all parameters except Earnings per Share. In the last two year, the growth rate Earnings per Share decline. The variability of Earnings per Share is more reflected in Bank of Abyssinia and then in United Bank. Moreover, the empirical findings of the study indicated that there is a significant difference on the growth of employees, deposit and loan among commercial banks in Ethiopia. However, there is no statistically significant difference on the growth of branches, capital, assets and Earnings per Share.
