Work-Family Conflict: A case study of Women Fish Vendors in Kanyakumari District

Achieving work-family balance is dependent on managing the conflict between work and family roles. The study focuses on the occurrence of work-family conflict among fisherwomen vendors in Kanyakumari District. The objective of the study is to examine the socio-economic status of women fish vendors and assess the level of work-family conflict faced by them. Incidental purposive sampling technique was adopted to select a sample of 501 respondents from three coastal villages Muttam, Kovalam and Manakkudi. Through personal interview method data pertaining to the study was collected from the selected coastal villages of Kanyakumari District between January 2015 and June 2015. The results of factor analysis revealed that dual responsibility (inter-role conflict), interpersonal conflict among family members (problems in family environment) and sexual harassment (problems in work environment) were the factors which caused work-family conflict in Muttam and Manakkudi Coastal villages.
