Education System and ̀Make in India' Initiative: A way to Go

India has been among the fastest-growing economies in the world in the last decade. However, low-quality education is crippling India's growth as its emerging workforce is unable to cope with the demands of a 21st-century economy. For India to become economically, politically, and socially developed, education is critical. Today, India already produces some of the most talented and intelligent students and workers, but questions related to quality, access and equity still challenge educational planners. A recent study titled Effective Education for Employment (EEE) by Edexcel stated that there is a huge mismatch between what is being taught in schools, colleges and universities and the knowledge, skills and behavior businesses and organizations are looking for, in new recruits. Even students felt that their education lacked relevance to the jobs they were hoping to apply for in the future. This reinforces the missing element "linking education to careers". In the hope of reaping India's demographic dividend, our governments has developed a ‘Skill India ’scheme, While we emphasize skilling, it is critical to understand that skilling is about ‘repair ’and give us only some short-term results. To unlock the true potential of our human capital, we must transform our school and higher education system to prepare our students for life and the workplace. This paper aims to provide a critical view about the existing education system and likely initiatives and reforms needed for empowering education to fulfill the dream of ̀Make in India' initiated by the government.
