Enhancement of Quality in Teacher Education: A Historical Perspective

The objective of celebrating National Education Day (11th November) should be to strengthen our educational institutions and to raise the quality of education to greater heights. Teaching has been a fundamental tool for the entire human race for passing on knowledge and experiences to the next generation. It's important has been recognized by all cultures at all times, which has given teaching a special place of honor. In our country, the teacher is addressed as Guruji, which shows the level of respect for them. Our education system must focus on the up gradation of teaching methodologies of teachers as well as their training and sensitization to social issues, including to gender equality (http://pratibhapatil.nic.in/sp111108.html). Every child deserves a quality teacher. In the era of increasing standards and accountability in education, teacher's quality and teacher training has become more important than ever. In facing up to the numerous challenges to teacher education in the era of digital technology and globalization, this paper facilitates the quest for qualities in teacher education. The quality of nation depends upon the quality of teachers. The quality of teachers that determines the overall effectiveness of system of education depends upon their own education that is popularly known as teacher education. As Rabindranath Tagore said, “a teacher can never truly teach unless he himself continuous to learn, just like lamp can't light another unless it continuous to burn in its own flame.” The illustrious poet Kalidas speaks of the Guru as who converts darkness into light and makes the invisible God visible.
