The Impact of Cholera Infectious on Tourism Sector in Tanzania: The Case of Arusha Region

Internationally tourism is the fastest growing sector backed with rigid competition on a number of issues. In Tanzania tourism is a major foreign exchange earner and is therefore an important source of employment and income for people involved in the sector directly and indirectly. For years now Tanzania has attracted many tourists from all over the world to its various attractions and adventures especially from the Northern corridor of Arusha. In the recent months there has been a challenge of cholera outbreak. However, in order Arusha remains competitive and center of attraction, its needs to put up measures in place where tourists will feel safe from cholera infectious. Although there are very few studies which make the link between the spread of cholera and the growth of tourism in Tanzania or East Africa, yet this cannot undermine the risk factors of the impact and sustainability of the tourism industry in the country and the East African region. The study has not been able to establish a direct quantitative cause and effect link between tourism and the spread of cholera infectious. The study findings points out that there are substantial gaps in the current knowledge of cholera awareness and poor infrastructures in most parts of affected areas.
