Abstract

Men and women are two inseparable parts of human society and they always shared swords and hours together. The birth of the Indian National Congress in 1885 furnished a political platform to women. It was in the year 1900 that Swarn Kumari and J. Gangoli attended the Congress session held in Calcutta as delegates from Bengal. This was perhaps a beginning of the new read and now onward the women took an increasingly active part in the political activities of the county. As a result Annie Besant was imprisoned. Later, on release, she enjoyed the highest honor by being elected President of the Indian National Congress. Sarojini Naidu was not only the first Indian woman to become the President of the Indian National Congress in 1925 but was also the first woman to lead the biggest salt raid in Bombay. So the women of India stepped forward to carry on the movement for independence. C.M. Reddi observed that “Dr. Annie Besant prepared the ground for the Gandhian freedom movement in which women have played a prominent part.”
