Abstract

College education is one of the crucial periods for youths. Youths are the important resources for the national development. For such development, proper education of youths, utilizing their ability and creativity and inculcating study engagement among them are very essential. Right education and high study engagement help them in developing suitable personality, which in turn make them good citizens. Many studies revealed that different personality factors and college environment can influence the study engagement pattern of the individual. In the present study, investigators tried to understand the study engagement pattern, locus of control, academic stress of the college students. This study also investigates the influence of locus of control, academic stress and sex on study engagement and it components. The participants of the study were 100 engineering students from Bangalore, India. To measure the variables under study, three research instruments were used and they were Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-S, Academic Stress Inventory and Locus of Control Scale along with a Personal Data Sheet. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and ‘t' test. Results revealed that the variable sex significantly influencing the components of study engagement ie vigor and dedication. The variable absorption has a significant association with locus of control and sex. Results also showed that boys have more inclination to study engagement compared to girls. The study implies that to improve the study engagement-an essential component in academic life of students-understanding their personality style as well as academic stress experienced by the students are to be addressed in time and in right manner. By giving counseling as well as examination anxiety intervention programmes on academic stress for both sexes separately in some situation and giving feedback about their perceived behavioral outcomes (LOC) one can bring somewhat high level of study engagement which will bring success in their academics.
