Abstract

The present study investigated self and environmental problems of visually, hearing and orthopaedically impaired students. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample. One hundred students studying in different schools (four special schools for physically impaired children and one normal school) of Jammu city formed the sample. There were 55 boys and 45 girls varying in age from 4 to 18 years. For the purpose of data collection the researcher used a structured ‘Interview Schedule’. Data were analysed with the help of ‘Content Analysis’ technique through ‘Calculation of frequencies’. On the basis of the frequencies and percentages, the investigator made her findings and interpretations. The analysis brings forth that majority of students (physically impaired; visually impaired, hearing impaired and orthopaedically impaired) face problems in mobility as well as in behaving with others. They feel that members of community show their mercy on them. But parental attitude is in a fix as few students reported that their parents feel ashamed of their disabilities. Also, their siblings were not cooperative and friendly with them. Their teachers were very supportive and appreciate their work. On one hand, the study revealed that physically impaired students have inferiority complex and on the other hand, they felt that they can compete with normal children. They were also interested in participating in social festivals and co-curricular activities. Self and environmental problems were very much visible in the results of the study. Hence, it is our duty to plan our system according to their needs and interests
