Gender equality as an essence of women empowerment

Abstract

Empowerment has been identified by The World Bank as one of the key constituent elements of poverty reduction, and as a primary development assistance goal. Gender mainstreaming in development assistance has also been make a priority and is in the process of implementing an ambitious strategy to this effect. Empowerment related issues give rise to the term of gender equality, which implies to give equal access to all the social goods, services, resources along with equal opportunities for both men and women in the spheres of life. Generally, whenever there is gender inequality, the women are more likely to be marginalize and remain in a disadvantage.

Women's historical and social disadvantages compensate for the different life experiences and needs of men and women, which implies to the concept of gender equality. In India, gender equality and women empowerment are the burning issues of the time. There is a need to have proper reorientation and re-evaluation to acknowledge the concerns that are inter-linked by it and this can be made possible only with the help of proper education, awareness and guidance. The present paper seeks to find out the relevance of gender equality in women empowerment. It also tries to justify the role of education for establishing gender equality and women empowerment in Indian society.
