Abstract

Maladaptive behavior is a major societal problem. For decades now, suicide remains among the leading causes of death in India. The pressure to perform well in the field of education is increasing day by day. The expectation from some parents is much beyond the capability of the child, the disillusioned child unable to compete takes the extreme step - suicide. Nearly one million people commit suicide each year. India seemingly has the highest suicide rate. In order to prevent this appalling situation, a survey was undertaken. A questionnaire was distributed among students, teachers and parents. The questions pertained to the attitude of the individual and his/her psychological state of mind. The study revealed that children in the age group of 14 years to 18 years are low inmental attitude and are very depressed. The paper also reviewed literature with latest developments on research and knowledge of suicide behaviors.
