Teaching competency in relation to teacher effectiveness of trainees in the college of teacher education in East Khasi Hills district

Abstract

Changes in the educational, political, social and economic contexts at the national and international levels, knowledge explosion and exposure to culture have also resulted changes in the system of teacher education in the state. Hence, Teacher Education should be strengthened. The study is taken with the objective to determine the level of competency and teacher effectiveness of the teacher trainees of the Colleges of teacher education of East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya using standardized tools. It was observed that the level of competency in the case of males is slightly higher than that of female teacher trainees. Also there is no significant difference in teacher effectiveness between male and female teacher trainees. The study also shows that there is positive significant relationship between teaching competency and teacher effectiveness. It also throws light on the areas which need to be developed so that effective teachers are generated through the Teacher Education Institutes. The study recommends the upgradation of Teacher Education curriculum, strategies of teaching and encouragement of innovations and academic autonomy.
