Enhancing professional development among pre-service and in-service teachers

This paper aims to achieve the objective how policy planner can bring change in national policy to provide a platform to in-service and pre-service teachers for their professional development. Several commissions and committees before and after independence have suggested changing in pre-service and in-service teacher education programme. The professional preparation of teachers has been recognized to be crucial for the qualitative improvement of education since 1960’s but very few concrete steps have been taken in the last five decades to operationalise this. Competence of teachers and their motivation is at degradation. There is a need to develop new effective programme in addition to traditional ones. These new programme must be guided by criteria based upon education research. National policy/leadership are required to identify and define programme with the aim to integration of content and pedagogy with daily life and professional development of teachers. A new concept mentor teachers is gaining momentum in the country. School Internship should also be designed to make as professional growth of teacher educators and school personnel.
